Yes, it is not about over-eating! It is a disease that affects nearly one-third of the adult American population (approximately 60 million).

Being Obese increases the risk of illness from about 30 serious medical conditions.

Being Obese may cause complications while undergoing medical or surgical operations.

Being Obese is the second leading cause of unnecessary deaths in the U.S.A. Every year, obesity causes at least 300,000 excess deaths in the U.S.A. (Source: BBC news – 22nd Jan 2004)

Being Obese causes individuals to also suffer from social stigmatization and discrimination. Employers prefer fit and trim workers.

The number of overweight and obese Americans has continued to increase since 1960, a trend that is not slowing down. Today, 64.5% of adult Americans (about 127 million) are overweight or obese.

This phenomenon is not unique in the U.S.A alone. Obesity is increasing rapidly around the world. The latest survey by World Health Organisation (WHO) indicates that obesity rate has steadily increased from 12% of the world population to 18% in the last seven years. Therefore, urgent action needs to be taken to reduce these figures.
